Symptoms of post-traumatic
stress in patients with
long-term pain
One in five patients with long-term pain experience such extensive symptoms of post-traumatic stress that they qualify for a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This group of patients also experience poorer health, lower physical functioning, more catastrophic thoughts, lower self-efficacy and poorer sleep than patients with long-term pain who do not also have PTSD. The study highlights the importance of being aware of possible PTSD when patients come for assessment and treatment for long-term pain.
